Antibiotic resistance
Over usage of antibiotics in the medical and animal production industries have always caused problems in antibiotic resistant strains of harmful bacteria such as salmonella and E.coli. Even though antibiotics are considered to be one of the greatest advances of medical science, their efficacy has been gradually decreasing because of the medical industries and mostly by livestock producers. If this continues to happen, then within a decade a simple cut could be fatal.
Recently, the FDA made changes in the antibiotics usage in animal voluntary. This move did not satisfy the public and people are asking for more severe actions to be taken to control the usage of antibiotic in the meat production industries. Instead of the voluntary change made by the FDA, routine usage of antibiotics in the large scale industries needs to be banned. The H.B. 1150, “The Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act”, also known as PMATA, introduced in 2013 by Representative Slaughter. But the bill did not gain enough co-sponsors to gain traction.
Food safety, Antibiotics and Chicken Production
There have been three major outbreaks of salmonella that was treatment resistant from the Foster Farms Chicken. These out breaks occurred in 2012 and 2013. This strain of salmonella was resistant to antibiotics that were usually used in treatment of such salmonella cases. The outcry of public in these cases has lead to the fact that the USDA, the FSIS and the FDA did not have enough power to make mandatory product recalls. Mandatory product recalls were never made by these federal organizations; they could only suggest voluntary recalls.
Attention is mainly focused only on the processing of chicken; processing is what happens to the meat in the processing plants. But, not enough attention has been given to the production of chicken, the methods in which the chickens are raised. If the food related out breaks need to be stopped, the entire food system must be noted and observed. For a healthier food system, all steps involved in meat production, like production, processing, transportation, distribution and consumption must be keenly noted.
The usage of antibiotics in chicken production in Foster Farms and other large scale meat production is not known. Forster Farms has a claim that all their fresh chicken is 100% natural. But, the production practices at Foster Farms and other meat producing companies is still not known. A joint letter was sent to Foster Farms recently in hopes of a disclosure on their antibiotic practices.
